Return of the Child

By: Hannah Rozenblat

Trudging back with the sunset

The streets seem silent

Not recognizing to welcome

The wandering child with upturned face

Weary eyes gazing at the dark house

A lone light emanating from the second story

Not in welcome but in accusation

Of the child who wished to escape

The child returning defeated

To a house that does not know to welcome

The child approaching it silently

Not knowing how to greet it

How to reply to its accusations

Wondering when the summer roses grew around it

If it had really been that long

Quietly entering through the back door.
