A Courtier to His Queen

By: Devorah Scott

If I’m taciturn

and don’t bow and scrape

like other men

at your royal throne

‘Tis only because

my eyes have seen

the lies and hypocrisy

surrounding you

The suppliants who

with bended knee,

and smiles and false praise

entreat your love

You are not a queen of beauty

nor the loveliest I have seen

I eschew overblown protestations

and instead offer you

my plain unvarnished heart
